Most fire code violations are not exotic. They are small, preventable oversights that accumulate between inspections. These are the five we see most often in Northwest Indiana commercial buildings.
1. Expired or missing extinguisher tags
The annual maintenance tag is the first thing a fire marshal checks. If the date is past due, that is an automatic violation. Fix: put every unit on a tracked annual service cycle.
2. Blocked equipment and exits
Storage stacked in front of extinguishers, pull stations, electrical panels, or exit doors is one of the most cited violations, and the easiest to fix. Walk your building monthly with fresh eyes.
3. Painted or damaged sprinkler heads
A painted sprinkler head is a failed sprinkler head. Renovation crews routinely paint right over them. Any painted, corroded, or loaded head must be replaced, never cleaned.
4. Fire alarm panels showing trouble
A panel in trouble or supervisory state means part of the system may not respond. Dead backup batteries are the usual culprit, they should be replaced on schedule, not when they fail.
5. Missing documentation
Even when systems work perfectly, missing inspection reports are themselves a violation. Your AHJ and insurance carrier both expect a paper trail. Keep reports for every system, every year, in one place.
